Cityscapes (EAF3504)

30 credits

From stark depictions of urban poverty to spectacular visions of futuristic metropolises, cities and the people who live in them have been persistent subjects of twentieth-century media. In this module you’ll explore a broadly chronological series of representations of the city, considering exemplary texts drawn especially from the cinema, but also from literature and popular fiction, graphic art, photography and television. You’ll use these texts to investigate the concept of the metropolis and the ways in which changing models of modernity have reflected and contributed to representations of the city. The city of bright lights, rational space and efficient living always co-exists with a city of alternative, opaque places, re-enchanted and reinvigorated by our use of them.
