Lost Worlds of the Long Nineteenth Century (TRU2013)

15 credits

This module will explore a variety of ‘lost worlds’ imagined by writers during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries—a time when such fiction exploded on the mass market. From lost Roman legions and mysterious subterranean civilizations to the discovery of Atlantis and remote islands with prehistoric life forms, this module looks across a range of adventure and fantasy fiction to understand how writers of the period engaged with questions of historicity, science and technology, nation and empire, as well as anthropology and race.
