Postgraduate Researcher
English and Creative Writing

Sofia Gallucci (she/her) is a part-time distance PhD researcher in the Department of English at the University of Exeter. Her research explores the dramaturgies of lovesickness in early modern drama, with a particular focus on the plays of Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher and their place within the repertory of the King’s Men.

Her project examines how lovesickness, desire and emotional states are made legible through the body in performance, combining literary and dramaturgical analysis with practice-as-research. Through contemporary rehearsal and performance practice, she is particularly interested in what the embodied languages of these plays can reveal when they are encountered by actors and audiences today.

Sofia’s research is informed by her parallel career as a professional theatre director and dramaturg. Her work spans the West End and major UK theatre companies, including the Royal Shakespeare Company and Shakespeare’s Globe, and her professional practice provides an important framework for her research into repertory, dramaturgy and the performing body.

Sofia is supervised by Professor Pascale Aebischer and Dr Vicky Sparey.
